About...

Concept:  At Modern for Kids you will find vintage and contemporary collectible prints and toys for kids. I have searched the globe to bring to the webshop vintage items that are one of a kind or hard to find as well as lots of nostalgic items and a unique selection of handcrafted contemporary crafts and art. There are unique handmade matroyshka dolls with paint kits from Russia, collectible wood toys from Denmark, circus posters and pennants from mid century USA, vintage children’s books with gorgeous illustrations dating back to the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. I am constantly searching through thousands of items just to find the few that appeal to a more modern aesthetic and have lovely colours, shape and or design.

Inspiration:  As a mother of two young troublemakers and a fan of just about all things modern, I often found that most of the modern items for childrens decor and play were ubiquitous.  I am a fan of simple modern furniture and a particular 'big box store' for their practicality and price however, in order to make the rooms special I like to decorate with things that have a bit of history and nostalgia.

FYI:  All of the vintage circus prints are original advertising posters used by different circus troops (often employing the same graphics).  Most are hard to find and make wonderful affordable art to decorate your children’s rooms and home and are collectible pieces that are classic.  With the debut of the traveling circus in the 1800s, posters became critical for drawing crowds to the performances. The circus was always eagerly anticipated (since films and other forms of entertainment were non-existent at the time) and weeks prior to their arrival, posters were pasted on barns and fences announcing the dates. Ads were initially simple however, in the early 20th century, colourful, custom designs of leaping animals, clowns, and ringmasters became standard for circus posters and included an added tear sheet which listed date, location and time of each performance.  When the circus arrived in town , aniticipation grew as wagons, exotic animals and clowns paraded through.

Framing collectible posters/prints:  Since most are thin paper posters/prints it is critical that the image is framed properly to avoid condensation and sunlight from ruining the quality of the image and decreasing the longevity of the image and decrease the value.

The website will constantly be updated with new items and since most of the items on the site are one or just a few of a kind – when they are gone they are gone and new unique finds will be posted instead.  You can browse through the sold category for past unique finds that have now found a home and should you have any ideas of products you would like to see – or if you missed out on buying that one of a kind item -  please feel free to email to see if another can be found.

Glad you could stop by and check out the site!
